Welcome, High School Students!

The King Conservation Science Scholars program is for curious high school students who have a desire to create positive change.

This program offers opportunities to get involved at Brookfield Zoo Chicago. Through hands-on experiences, King Scholars explore their interests in conservation, zoology, and more. They'll participate in workshops, immersive experiences, and public engagement opportunities.

Offered: Year-round; Onboarding new cohorts each May and November

Ages: High School youth (Grades 9-12, typically ages 14-18)

Applications to join our summer 2026 cohort will open March 1, 2026.

Applications

King Conservation Science Scholars is a program with a one-time application. Applicants will share information about their interest in the program, recent accomplishments, and college and career aspirations. Letters of recommendation are not required but welcome.

Applications may open earlier or close later, but these dates represent the guaranteed timeline of when they will be open.

Applications Open Twice a Year:

March 1 to April 1

  • Applicants should be enrolled in Grade 9, 10, or 11 at the time of application*

  • Grade 8 applicants are eligible for our KCLA Transitions program*

  • Onboarding will take place in early to mid-May (parents/guardians must also attend)

*Note: Grade 12 applicants are not accepted in the spring because they will be high school graduates at the start of the summer programming season. Only individuals accepted in the fall of Grade 12 or earlier are eligible to participate in summer programming.

Additionally, Grade 8 graduates are eligible to start King Scholars prior to their official start of high school by participating in the KCLA Transitions program.

King Scholar Opportunities

Interpretation & Facilitation

Using engaging public speaking to promote conservation action.

King Scholars have the wonderful chance to connect with Zoo guests and people from our community! Through special courses and supportive coaching, they help bring exciting programs to life at the Zoo. It's a great way for high school students to grow their confidence and develop their public speaking skills—all while having fun and helping guests at the Zoo!

They have the opportunity to:

  • Provide animal facts and explanations

  • Help guests navigate the park

  • Teach programs with a variety of biological artifacts

  • Lead interactive activities for their peers and for kids

Courses & Activities

King Scholars take part in many STEAM-based learning opportunities at the Zoo, online, or in the community. These experiences offer a supportive space to learn, connect, and have fun with others who share similar interests.

  • Sociology and Psychology

  • Art and Media

  • Communication and Marketing

  • College and Career Prep

  • Natural Science

  • Community Engagement

The King Academy Alumni Network helps past and current participants stay connected.

King Academy has impacted thousands of people, many of whom now work in conservation and related fields. The Alumni Network is a space to share resources, find mentors, get career guidance, and stay part of a supportive community.

King Conservation Science Scholars is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for teens passionate about animals and conservation. Along with building lifelong friendships, developing social skills and hands-on learning opportunities from world-renowned educators, active participation throughout the year provides:

  • Opportunities to join youth advisory teams

  • The ability to apply King Scholar transcripts to college applications, resumes, and various volunteer service requirements

  • Access to Brookfield Zoo Chicago, comparable to an Individual Basic membership, a bundle of ten free general admission passes to share with family and friends, free access to select Zoo attractions, as well as discounts in Zoo restaurants.

King Scholars who are regular and consistent participants also gain opportunities to apply for:

  • Scholarships offered through Brookfield Zoo Chicago

  • Travel experiences

  • Seasonal job opportunities

  • Specialty certifications and trainings related to zoos, aquariums, museums

Requirements

Kings Scholars commit to:

  • A minimum number of engagement hours each year of active enrollment

  • Completion of a capstone project

  • Supporting a positive experience for self and others by following the rules and expectations of Brookfield Zoo Chicago and the King Conservation Leadership Academy.

Requirement specifics are provided during the onboarding process.

King Conservation Science Scholars are offered a wide range of ways to stay involved in the program throughout the year, whether in-person at the Zoo, in the community, or virtually. These opportunities are available thanks to the generosity of grants, donors, and other financial supporters. To honor the commitment of those who support our program, participants must be present and engaged.
