Veterinary Student Rotations

Brookfield Zoo Chicago offers 4-week veterinary rotations for fourth-year veterinary students from U.S. schools or final-year students from non-U.S. schools.

Program Overview

Students gain hands-on experience in zoological medicine and animal management by working with the Veterinary Services Team and ACZM Diplomates. The rotation exposes students to a wide variety of species, including large mammals, carnivores, primates, marine mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and small mammals.Students participate in all aspects of veterinary care and wildlife management, including:

  • Preventive medicine (vaccinations, parasite surveillance, TB testing, physical exams)

  • Quarantine and animal transport (CDC/USDA/APHIS regulations)

  • Surgery, clinical pathology, imaging (CT, ultrasound, radiology), nutrition, enrichment, and husbandry

  • Case management, immobilization/anesthesia, record keeping, journal clubs, rounds, and research projects

Students also have opportunities to interact with allied programs such as the University of Illinois Zoological Medicine Service and Zoological Pathology Program, and the Illinois Zoological and Aquatic Animal Residency Program.

Responsibilities

Active participation in medical care, diagnostics, record keeping, case discussions, and research assignments.

Required materials:

  • One-page cover letter describing your interest in zoological/wildlife medicine, career goals, GPA, and class rank; include three preferred rotation dates.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)

  • Two letters of reference

  • Housing: Not provided; assistance in finding affordable options available

  • Transportation: Not provided; free parking available

  • Insurance: Must be provided by the student

  • Expenses: Students cover travel and lodging

  • International Applicants: International applicants are encouraged to apply. Proof of English proficiency required (TOEFL, IELTS, or First Certificate). For internet based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) a minimum of 110 total score is needed.
