The Nation's First Wildlife Residency Program

The Forest Preserves of Cook County is home to the nation’s first wildlife residency program approved by the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) — a groundbreaking initiative advancing wildlife and ecosystem health.

The Illinois Zoological and Wildlife Health Management Residency is a collaborative program developed in partnership between Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Forest Preserves of Cook County, and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. This unique, three-year residency provides advanced training in veterinary science with a focus on wildlife health in urban and suburban environments.

Program Overview

This intensive residency is designed to expand scientific knowledge and hands-on expertise in wildlife health management, disease surveillance, and ecosystem conservation. Residents gain real-world experience working across diverse settings and animal populations.

Resident Responsibilities & Opportunities

Participants in the program will:

  • Provide veterinary services for Forest Preserves of Cook County field programs

  • Conduct research focused on wildlife and ecosystem health

  • Gain clinical experience with animals at Brookfield Zoo Chicago and the Wildlife Epidemiology Lab at the University of Illinois

  • Work closely with 20 experienced veterinary mentors

  • Play a key role in the wildlife health management of a wide range of animal species

This nationally recognized residency program prepares veterinary professionals to become leaders in wildlife medicine, conservation, and public health.
