The Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database for Professionals

The ZARD's Mission

The mission of the Zoo and Aquarium Radiology Database is to serve as a transformative resource empowering veterinary professionals to leverage diagnostic imaging to advance the standard of zoo and aquarium animal care and wellbeing; support global wildlife conservation; and promote scientific discovery.

Intended Use

The ZARD is a specialized reference resource designed for veterinary professionals performing diagnostic imaging on zoological species. The database provides curated diagnostic imaging studies across multiple taxa to support clinical reference, education, and scientific research.

Non-veterinary professionals, such as educators, may access the ZARD to display images during lectures for visual reference only.

Images may not be downloaded, reproduced, recorded, or redistributed for presentations, exams, publications, or other materials, in accordance with the End User Licensing Agreement. Audiences must be explicitly informed that photographing or recording displayed images is prohibited.

Utilizing the information contained within the ZARD for data collection requires pre-approval by the leadership team. All ZARD users, veterinary and non-veterinary, must submit the AZA research proposal form prior to utilizing the database for data collection. Email zard@brookfieldzoo.org with questions or requests.

Radiologist Recruitment

We are actively recruiting volunteer board-certified veterinary radiologists to read studies for the database! Email us to volunteer - we look forward to working with you!

You will also receive a welcome email directly from Vet Rocket once your ZARD account is created.

What happens if I forget my login credentials?

If you forget your username or password, contact the ZARD at zard@brookfieldzoo.org, and one of our leadership team members will reset it for you.

User Criteria

Can I share my login credentials with other employees at my institution or elsewhere?

No, the ZARD end user licensing agreement states that only the signee can use your account. Our goal is to provide an educational resource that advances animal care and wellbeing while protecting the data (imaging studies, anonymized patient data, etc.) from spilling into the public sphere.

I’m changing jobs and need to update my login credentials. What do I do?

Contact the ZARD leadership team at zard@brookfieldzoo.org with your new institution, email, and role, and we will adjust your account.

I signed up for the ZARD when I was a veterinary or vet tech student, but now I’m graduating. Do I still have access to the ZARD?

Once you graduate, your account will be deactivated. However, if you become affiliated with a zoological institution, you may register for a new account.

I have a colleague or friend in private practice that is performing diagnostic imaging on a zoo species. Can I share reference images with them if I’m logged in under my account?

No, practitioners or associated professionals working in private practice as a veterinarian or veterinary technician do not meet our user requirements. One exception is a private practitioner that is the Attending Veterinarian for a zoological institution at a registered USDA Animal Care Facility.

We encourage veterinarians working in private practice to contact a board-certified veterinary radiologist for assistance in interpreting patient images. Please email zard@brookfieldzoo.org if you have questions.

I’m a zoological companion (“exotics”) clinician or specialist in private practice. May I have access to the ZARD?

No, practitioners or associated professionals working in private practice as a veterinarian or veterinary technician do not meet our user requirements. One exception is a private practitioner that is the Attending Veterinarian for a zoological institution at a registered USDA Animal Care Facility.

We encourage veterinarians working in private practice to contact a board-certified veterinary radiologist for assistance in interpreting patient images. Please email zard@brookfieldzoo.org if you have questions.

If I’m a radiologist, do I need to be affiliated with a zoological institution or veterinary school to be granted access to the ZARD?

No, you do not. We are excited to provide this resource to all board-certified radiologists and veterinarians currently completing a radiology residency or specialty internship. Please visit our homepage https://brookfieldzoo.org/zard and click the button “Click Here to Register” to create an account.

If I’m a radiologist, does my ACVR, ECVDI, or other international radiologist specialty membership get me access to ZARD?

As of September 2024, we are not currently accepting research proposals. However, users will be notified via email when the application process is open.

Can I use the ZARD for clinical diagnosis?
